Unique performances of the Last Post will be played on a violin, oboe, sax and dhol drum while balloons ascend at 6pm to mark the First World War Centenary at Bristol International Balloon Fiesta this weekend.
Working in conjunction with The Last Post Project, the BBC’s World War One at Home Tour will host different musicians each as new interpretations of the poignant ceremonial call are played to mark 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War.
Organised by Bristol based arts organisation Superact with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, The Last Post Project will see families, community groups and schools come together to host events in November that will share local stories, showcase music from the First World War era and play the Last Post on any instrument for individuals or groups whose lives were affected.
The weekend’s performances of the Last Post will be brought to audiences in conjunction with Incredible India, an outreach initiative led by the Indian Government. Recognising the wide span of nations impacted by World War One, The Last Post Project encourages people to play the Last Post on instruments that reflect the global nature of the war. India played an extensive role in the First World War with over 1 million men serving throughout the war.
The following performances of the Last Post will take place at the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta in the BBC World War One at Home Parade Ground at 6pm:
Friday 8th August - John Archer will play The Last Post on the violin
Saturday 9th August – Paul Sartin of Bellowhead, Faustus and Belshazzar’s Feast will play The Last Post on the oboe
Sunday 10th August – Sarha Moore and Jas Daffu of The Bollywood Brass Band will play The Last Post on the soprano sax and dhol drum
